STATEMENT OF THE G-77 AND CHINA DURING THE WORKING GROUP ON FIREARMS, DELIVERED BY MR. INDRA ROSANDRY, PERMANENT MISSION OF INDONESIA ON BEHALF OF H.E. ALIYAR LEBBE ABDUL AZEEZ, PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SRI LANKA

Vienna, 26 May 2014

Madam Chairperson,

On behalf of the Group of 77 and China, allow me to congratulate you on your election as Chairperson of this 2nd Session of the Working Group on Firearms. Rest assured of our support for the successful conclusion of the meeting.

The Group also commends the Secretariat for the excellent preparations made to support the work of this session.

Madam Chairperson,

At the fifth Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto, a working group on firearms was established to advise and assist the Conference in the implementation of its mandate with regard to the Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, their Parts and Components and Ammunition, supplementing the Convention.

In this regard, we take note with appreciation the continued work of the Working Group within its mandate, to, inter alia, facilitate implementation of the Protocol, and make recommendations to the Conference on how States parties could better implement the provisions of the Firearms Protocol.

In these coming days, the delegations present will have an opportunity to share experiences, challenges and good practices on all issues on the agenda within the mandate of this Working Group. It is hoped that the outcome of this meeting will provide fruitful recommendations to the Conference to continue improving the implementation of the Protocol.

In this regard, we wish to encourage all delegations to lead constructive and substantive deliberations throughout the course of this session. We look forward to engage in a constructive dialogue with a view to achieving the objectives of this meeting. Finally, we wish you success in your work.

Thank you.
