Vienna, 21 May 2012
Madam Chairperson,
The Group welcomes the start of the activities of the working group on Firearms
and would like to congratulate you on your election as Chairperson.
Madam Chairperson,
The fifth Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational
Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto, decided to establish a working
group on firearms to advise and assist the Conference in the implementation
of its mandate with regard to the Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing
of and Trafficking in Firearms, their Parts and Components and Ammunition, supplementing
UNTOC.
In these coming two days, the delegations present will have an opportunity
to share experiences, challenges and good practices on all the issues within
the mandate of this Working Group. The outcome of this meeting will provide
recommendations to the Conference to improve the implementation of the protocol
and better coordination with the various international bodies.
In this regard, the Group wishes to encourage all delegations to lead fruitful
and substantive deliberations throughout the course of this session. We stand
ready to engage in a constructive dialogue with a view to achieving the objectives
of this meeting.
