Remarks by the Group of 77 and China on the final draft of the Industrial Development Board’s input to the High-level Political Forum (HLPF) 2018, 19 April 2018
Madam President,
1. On behalf of the Group of 77 and China, I would like to thank the Secretariat for their tireless efforts in preparing the draft inputs, entitled, “Transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies: using synergies of sustainable energy systems and inclusive, sustainable industrial development that leaves no one behind” to the High-Level Political Forum 2018.
2. The Group strongly emphasises that inputs to the HLPF 2018 should be fully aligned with the mandate of the UNIDO, which is to promote and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development (ISID) as prescribed in Goal 9 of SDGs (Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation).
3. While UNIDO’s activities contribute to more than one SDGs due to the interlinked nature of the SDGs, the Group continues to underline that UNIDO’s inputs to the HLPF 2018 should be grounded on the Organization’s core mandate, namely the promotion of SDG 9.
4. Having said that, The Group appreciates the Secretariat’s continued efforts to hold consultations with all Member States at both bilateral and regional levels in an open, transparent and inclusive manner.
5. The Group welcomes the final draft by the IDB to the HLPF. The final draft, is a consensual document, which strives, as much as possible, to take into account the concerns and views expressed by all UNIDO Members.
6. The Group is pleased to note that the final draft of the Board’s inputs has underlined several key important issues to both Member States and UNIDO, especially assessment of current energy needs, gaps and challenges, as well as ways to addressing these through among others, effective means of technical assistance and technology transfer.
7. Finally, the Group sincerely hopes that the Final draft inputs by IDB will be taken into due considerations by the HLPF, in supporting and profiling UNIDO’s efforts to promote the SDG 9.
