Statement of the G-77 and China during the IAEA Board of Governors Meeting, 29-30 November 2001 delivered by H.E. Ambassador S.H. Shoukry, Permanent Representative of Egypt

Agenda Item 3: Regional Co-operative Agreement for Arab States in Asia for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology (ARASIA)

Mr. Chairman,
The Group of 77 and China has carefully reviewed the document GOV/2001/49 and taken note of its attachment entitled "Regional Co-operative Agreement for Arab States in Asia for Research, Development and Training related to Nuclear Science and Technology" (ARASIA).

The Group notes with satisfaction that the proposed agreement reflects the determination of the parties to strengthen technical cooperation activities among each other and the Agency by promoting and coordinating co-operative activities in various areas, such as training, development and applications of nuclear science and technology.

The Group is hopeful that the proposed agreement will add to the existing Regional Co-operative Agreements (RCA, AFRA and ARCAL), by promoting further development and application of nuclear science and technology through the regional approach.

Mr. Chairman,
With these brief comments, the Group of 77 and China would like to endorse the Agreement set forth in the Attachment to the document GOV/2001/49.

Item 5: Protection against nuclear terrorism

The Group has taken preliminary note of document GOV/2001/50 on 'Protection Against Nuclear Terrorism', and believes that the additional activities outlined therein deserve careful consideration, including the possible forms of financing for new measures that Member States decide to adopt.
